Knife-wielding burglar leaves woman in fear

22 January 2020

THREE people were left terrified after two men brandishing weapons forced their way into a house near Downpatrick on Monday morning.

One woman was threatened by a man wielding a knife, while his accomplice was armed with a metal pole during the traumatic ordeal.

The incident at the Ballintogher Road took place shortly after 6am. The man who was armed with the knife pushed the woman on to a sofa, leaving her extremely frightened.

The two men made off in a stolen black coloured Ford Ka which was later found abandoned at nearby Saul Brae.

Police have also confirmed that a sum of money was reported stolen during Monday’s aggravated burglary.

Officers investigating the incident have issued deions of the two men believed to be involved and have appealed to the public for help.

The man armed with the knife is believed to be between 30-35 years old and around six foot tall. He is described as ‘heavy set’. Police believe that had a pale complexion and was wearing a grey hooded top.

The other suspect is described as being approximately five foot 10 inches tall.

It is believed that he is around 20 years old and was wearing a hooded top that covered his face. It is believed he had brown hair and blue eyes.

Police yesterday confirmed that enquiries into the incident are continuing and that a 24 year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of a number of offences.

They include aggravated burglary with intent to steal, taking a vehicle and causing damage to it, burglary with intent to steal and possession of an offensive weapon. The man remains in custody at this time.

Police have confirmed that no injuries were reported following what they described as the “horrific ordeal”, although the three people who were in the house were left badly shaken by their traumatic ordeal.

Officers investigating the incident are keen to hear from anyone who may have been in the Ballintogher Road on Monday between 6am and 6.15am and who many have noticed any suspicious activity, including two men matching the description of the suspects.

Police are also keen to hear from anyone who may have seen a black Ford Ka in the area to get in touch using the non-emergency 101 number, quoting reference number 179 of 20/01/20.
