Killinchy set to host popular Zone finals

KILLINCHY will host this season’s Mid Down Zone Bowls finals on Friday night. 

The winners will represent Mid Down in the Irish National Championships which will be held in Shaw’s Bridge, Belfast, March 10 and 24. 

The action starts at 7pm with the national fours, ladies’ triples and junior singles. The junior pairs follows at 7.30. The national triples, ladies pairs and over 55 pairs have a start time of 8.30pm. 

After a short break around 9.45pm for supper, the evening will be rounded off with the finals of the national singles, ladies’ singles and national pairs which are scheduled for 10.15pm.

There is duplication this year with Peter Christie and Paul McNamara of Spa Golf Club and David Anderson of Ballygowan Presbyterians appearing in three finals. Robin Horner, Graham Christie, Colin Wilson, Don McNamara and Alan Laughlin of Spa Golf Club and Geraldine Morgan of Teconnaught and Crossgar are appearing in two finals. 

The national fours final is an all Spa Golf Club affair which features Rose Marie Wylie, Robin Horner, Graham Christie and Peter Christie against Colin Wilson, Don McNamara, Paul McNamara and Alan Laughlin. 

The national triples final sees Robin Horner, Graham Christie and Peter Christie take on Colin Wilson, Don McNamara, Paul McNamara and Alan Laughlin. The national pairs will be contested by Alec Burgess and David Anderson of Ballygowan Presbyterians and the holders Nigel and Neil Brown of St Mary’s,Killyleagh. The singles final will see Peter Christie of Spa Golf Club play club mate Paul McNamara. 

Geraldine Morgan of Teconnaught and Crossgar plays Mary Brown of Comber BC in the final of the ladies’ singles. The host club will be represented in the ladies’ pairs by Beth McIlwrath and Anne McNeilly and their opponents are Joan Gamble and Elsie Alexander of Saintfield BC. 

The ladies’ triples is between Daphne Shilliday, Geraldine Morgan and Lorna Stevenson of Teconnaught and Crossgar and Second Saintfield’s Sally McAllister, Renee Mills and Josephine Copes. 

David Anderson of Ballygowan Presbyterians plays Daniel Spratt of Kilmore Presbyterians in the junior singles final. In the U-18 pairs David Maxwell and David Anderson of Ballygowan Presbyterians play club mates Ethan Topping and Adam Aicken.

In the over 55 pairs the final will be between former winners Jim McClenaghan and Dessie Long of Ballygowan Presbyterians and Alan Telford and Liam Higgins of St Patrick’s Golf Club. 

Meanwhile, the following team has been selected to represent Mid-Down Ladies in the quarter-finals of the Ladies’π Inter-Zone competition against Monaghan on Saturday in Killinchy Church Hall at 2 pm sharp:

All players and reserves are requested to be in attendance by 1.30 pm. Any player selected (including reserves) who is unable to attend should contact the zone convener as soon as possible on 07753 265028. Zone/white tops, mid grey trousers/skirts and proper bowling shoes are to be worn.
