Hopes Dunleath Park can be hub for cyclists

DOWNPATRICK councillor Gareth Sharvin has welcomed plans to establish a cycle hub at Down Leisure Centre and Dunleath Park in partnership with Cycling Ireland.

Two 20-foot containers will be used – one for hosting courses and tutoring, and the other to be used for bike storage, maintenance and a workshop facility.

Last week’s meeting of Newry, Mourne and Down Council’s Active and Healthy Communities Committee approved the scheme, which Cllr Sharvin described as a welcome addition for Dunleath Park and Downpatrick.

“This is the second project item to be planned for Dunleath Park following the SDLP’s motion to council calling for the development of sporting and recreational activities at the site,” he said.

The new cycling hub will compliment and utilise the planned build of a recreational path around the perimeter of Dunleath Park.”

The cycle hub is part of a new initiative by Cycling Ireland who are working in partnership with local authorities to establish similar facilities across Northern Ireland.

Councillor Sharvin added: “This will be a great addition to the area of Downpatrick and the district. The cycle hub will see the establishment of an innovative and unique cycling development training project based out of Dunleath and Down Leisure Centre.

“The hub will deliver courses, tutoring and programmes to the public. This is a great opportunity for Downpatrick to become a real destination for cycling.”
