A FUNDRAISING tournament held at Temple Golf Club recently raised almost £7,600 for Dementia NI.

Around 70 golfers took part in the charity day organised by Mar-Train Haulage, with 17 teams battling it out on the greens and fairways to be crowned the winners. After a great day of golf, the team from Spence Engineering Ltd took the top honours.

The Dementia NI Down and Lisburn fundraising group gave their support during the event, taking photographs, running an auction and raffle at the evening prize giving.

The charity’s income generation manager, Fionnuala Savage, has thanked everyone who supported the event and Mar-Train Haulage for organising the fundraiser in support of local people living with dementia.

She said it’s estimated that 20,000 people across Northern Ireland living with dementia, an illness which affects every person differently. Anyone can develop the condition at any age, from all walks of life.

Dementia NI was founded in January 2015 by five people living with the condition.

The lives of those diagnosed with the illness are dramatically changed as a result, with the charity working to ensure everyone living with dementia receives an accurate and timely diagnosis, have access to appropriate services and will live well with the right support.

Fionnuala added: “The support or this year’s Mar-Train Haulage Ltd charity golf day means we can continue to raise awareness, educate the public, challenge the stigma of dementia and support those living with dementia and their families”

Tim Martin, of the Lisburn-based Mar-Train Haulage, said the charity golf day has become a permanent fixture in the company’s annual fundraising calendar.

“This year was a record-breaking fundraising success and we were delighted to present Dementia NI with a cheque for £7,596.94 — the most amount we have raised from our charity golf day in the three years we have run the event,” he explained.

“I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who supported the event, including local businesses who sponsored a hole, our team of golfers for taking part, everyone who donated prizes for the raffle and auction and those who bought tickets to attend the evening charity dance.”

Tim added: “The day was a huge success and raised thousands of pounds for Dementia NI, a very worthy charity doing a fantastic work to support people living with dementia.”
