Ewe wouldn’t believe it... 10 year-old Lewis helps deliver lambs

THE lambing season is a hectic time of the year for sheep farmers — and not least for ten year-old Lewis Nicholson.

Lewis, whose grandparents, Robin and Barbara Nicholson, are from Downpatrick, lives on the family farm near Kilkeel with his parents, Robert and Jennifer, and sisters Lara (13) and Zoe (9).

Last week one of their ewes gave birth to four lambs and Lewis was in the thick of the action.

After delivering two of the lambs himself, he got help from his dad to deliver the other two and then made sure they got the best possible care.

“Lewis is very dedicated and he was up half the night looking after them,” mum Jennifer said.

“It’s all go during the lambing season, which is nearly over, and these ones were a bit late.”

The Nicholsons keep cattle as well as sheep on their farm. As well as helping his dad, Lewis recently bought 12 ewes to start his own flock, which he intends to build up.

His mum says Lewis is keen to carry on the family tradition by becoming the latest generation to earn his living off the land.

“Farming is in the blood. There is not much we can do about it,” she added.
