Event in memory of much loved father raises £3k for cancer unit

19 February 2025

A DOWNPATRICK family’s fundraising concert in memory of their much-loved father has raised an incredible £3,000 for the Macmillan Cancer Unit at the Ulster Hospital.

‘If The Music Fitz’ was organised by sisters Deborah, Karen and Bridgette Fitzsimons and Laura Black in memory of their late father, Damien, who sadly passed away from lung cancer in February 2023.

Damien was a member of renowned local bands Purple Haze and Red Biddy, and the event saw 23 musicians he had performed with during his life taking to the stage at Denvir’s Coaching Inn.

Among them were his talented daughter, Deborah, who he had gigged with many times.

Delighted by the overwhelming support, the sisters thanked all those who made the night a success.

They said: “To every single musician and band who took to the stage — what a display of unbelievable talent. You filled the room with so much energy and joy, making the night unforgettable. We are truly grateful to each of you for sharing your time and talent with us.

“A special mention goes to Sam Murray, Paul Fitzsimons, Michael Fitzsimons and Gerry Tweedie, who went above and beyond to ensure every musician had the best possible sound through the PA system. Your expertise and dedication did not go unnoticed — thank you for being such an essential part of the event.”

The family also thanked those who had helped to organise the event and prepare the venue.

“We want to give a special thank you to Uncle Jerome for generously securing the venue through your great connections.

“Another very special thanks goes to our Aunt Michelle for her generosity in funding all the beautiful balloons and decorations that brightened up the venue and made the night feel extra special.

“To Denvir’s of Downpatrick and their wonderful manager, Ursula, who generously donated the room and provided delicious food for the event. Your kindness and support gave us the perfect setting for such a meaningful night.”

The event saw a successful raffle being held to raise money for the important cause.

“To all the companies and individuals who donated such amazing raffle prizes — your generosity blew us away,” the sisters said.

Finally the family thanked everyone who attended, showed their support and made donations at the event.

“Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your presence, kindness, and contributions made this fundraiser a true celebration of community, love, and remembrance.”

The sisters presented a cheque for £3,000 to Angela Berry, Ward Manager at the Macmillan Cancer Unit at the Ulster Hospital, last week.

Deborah said: “Throughout his journey, Macmillan was there for us every step of the way, offering guidance and unwavering support, not just to Damien but to our entire family. He was always grateful to the incredible staff who cared for him during his treatment.”

Thanking everyone who contributed, Angela said: “We are incredibly grateful to Deborah, her family and everyone who contributed to this fantastic event at Denvir’s Coaching Inn.

“Their generosity and dedication will make a real difference in supporting patients and families who rely on the Macmillan Cancer Unit. The funds raised will help us continue providing compassionate care and essential services to those in need.”
