THE Eco team at Down High School has been hard at work in recent months on the ‘Grow Bag Project’.

As an ambassador Eco school, Down High wanted to get local schools more involved in collaborative project and growing and creating sustainable food production was an ideal choice.

The grow bags needed to be as sustainable as possible and the pupils and staff got involved in their production. All material was donated and sewing machines were lent by the Art department.

Eighty per cent of the seeds were provided free of charge by Mr Brian Faulkner from Seeds Ireland. These were sent in bulk bags which the Down High pupils then put into smaller labelled seed packets. Newry Mourne and Down Council also kindly donated sunflower seeds.

The compost was kindly donated by New Leaf Compost in Moira and the plant labels were made from cut-offs from NI Plastics in Shrigley, Killyleagh.

The school’s Technology department cut the boards into strips to be shaped into plant labels and the HE department provided information for recipes for the produce grown from the seeds.

A spokesperson for the school said: “We look forward to tracking the progress made by local schools and in the autumn term we will all get together to celebrate with a harvest feast.”
