Conor nets his first goal for Glentoran

24 February 2021

DOWNPATRICK soccer star Conor McMenamin netted his first Glentoran goal last Tuesday night as they swept aside Portadown 3-1 at Shamrock Park in the Danske Bank Irish Premiership.

The goal and performance continued McMenamin’s strong start to life with Mick McDermott’s team. McMenamin made the switch from Cliftonville to the east Belfast men in last month’s transfer window.

His goal against the Ports came in just the second minute. He picked up on a driven cross from Robbie McDaid to volley it into the back of the net.

Just before the half-hour mark, the Glens made it 0-2. Hrvoje Plum scored from the penalty spot.

McMenamin almost netted again just moments later, but this time his shot went narrowly wide.

Lee Bonis pulled a goal back in the second half for the Ports, but Glentoran wrapped the points up when Plum fed Donnelly, who found the back of the net.

The men from the Oval were back in action again last night against old foes Linfield. On Friday evening, McMenamin will be hoping he and his team-mates can stay on-track when they visit Carrick Rangers.

Elsewhere, David Healy’s Linfield extended their lead at the top to three points. However the KIllyleagh man had to be content with a share of the points after a hard-fought 0-0 draw with Coleraine.

After last night’s meeting with Glentoran, the Blues are now preparing to face another crunch clash this weekend when they play Larne. The Inver Park Reds are hot on their heels at the summit in what is shaping up to be a fascinating chase this season for the Gibson Cup.
