A £265,0000 road surfacing scheme on the Ardglass Road, Downpatrick starts on Monday.
The work will involve drainage works and the resurfacing of a 1.75 km stretch of the B1 Ardglass Road from its junction with Ballyclander Road to Tobermoney.
A section of the road — from the Ardglass Road/ Ballyclander Road to the Struell Wells Road junction - will be closed every day from 8am to 5pm. The road will be re-opened each evening and over weekends.
The Department of Infrastructure (DfI) say that most of the work is expected to be completed by August 24.
A diversion route will be signed with traffic being diverted via Ardglass Road / Downpatrick Road, Quay Street / Bath Street / Kildare Street / High Street / Killough Road / Station Road, Downpatrick Road / Killough Road, Flying Horse Road and Ardglass Road.
DfI say the work will deliver significant improvements to both the structural integrity and surface quality of the road.
However, the fact that the late stages of the work coincides with the hosting of the Girls British Open Amateur Championship at Ardglass Golf club has been criticised by Downpatrick councillor Cadogan Enright.
The golf championship runs from August 14-18 and the road will be closed until the final day of the competition.
The Independent councillor said that he has asked Transport NI to consider starting the work a week earlier or to try to finish the work earlier.
“It would be a shame for it to affect the British Girls’ Open. This contest is likely to be widely attended and supported,” said Mr Cadogan.
“There have been great efforts to spruce up the village and make everything ready for the event.
“While we will all glad to see the resurfacing work on the Ardglass Road finished, a modicum of flexibility in the timing of this sequence of works would bring benefits for everyone.
“Transport NI say they are looking into my concerns and are attempting to see if there is any flexibility available in the contract at this late stage. Hopefully a win-win situation can be achieved whereby visitors for the Open will get the benefit of the new road surface.”
