Anti-social behaviour tops concerns in Rowallane area

22 January 2020

ANTI-social behaviour and criminality are the top two concerns among people across the Rowallane area, according to those who took part in a recent on-line survey.

The social media questionnaire was set up by local councillors Kathryn Owen and Billy Walker and with the help of other Facebook groups was shared widely.

A total of 133 people completed the survey and while many were happy with the Rowallane area’s community feel, describing people as “friendly and always happy to help”, there was major concern about anti-social behaviour and criminality.

As a result, Cllrs Owen and Walker met with Strangford MP Jim Shannon and new Stormont education minister Peter Weir. They are now seeking a meeting with the PSNI’s Darren Hardy to discuss ratepayers’ concerns.

Cllr Owen said there is concern about burglaries and other serious incidents across Rowallane, specifically in Saintfield and Killyleagh.

She revealed that she has met with a number of community groups including the Saintfield Development Association, suggesting members spearhead neighbourhood watch schemes.

In addition, Cllr Owen unveiled plans to hold a meeting of concerned residents and community groups and invite police to discuss local concern and look at suggestions for the future.

“I also hope to meet with the principals of all secondary schools in the area and arrange a presentation for the children with all councillors in attendance and the PSNI present,” confirmed Cllr Owen.

“I would also like to thank everyone who took the time to respond to the survey.”

Cllr Walker thanked his Rowallane colleague for instigating the survey and confirmed that he plans to raise the issues of anti-social behaviour and drug use at the next meeting of the district’s Policing and Community Safety Partnership.

He also hopes that Newry, Mourne and Down Council community safety officers will be deployed in Saintfield and Killyleagh, in particular.

“It is clear that these two locations are hot-spots and the issues that people have highlighted need to be addressed,” added Cllr Walker.
