‘Lovely’ day for people to connect

ST John’s Church in Newcastle hosted a special St Valentine’s Day lunch on Friday.

The fully-booked free event was open to those from housing associations and others from across the community.

The 120 guests were treated to stew, apple tart and heart-shaped shortbread in the church hall, which was decorated with red balloons for the special occasion.

Local singer Finbarr Keaveney provided entertainment, singing a selection of love songs which some guests took the opportunity to dance to.

The Rev Myrtle Morrison, rector of St John’s Church, said she was delighted to welcome a cross-section of the community to the event.

“The lunch was a way for everyone to forget their worries for a couple of hours,” she said.

“Two widows told me they were happy to be sharing the day with others.

“Those who hadn’t seen each other in years recognised each other from across the hall and were able to reconnect. It was lovely.”

The Rev Morrison thanked Shared Housing for sponsoring the event and everyone who helped to make the day a success.
